NCT Headlight Requirements in Ireland: What Will Fail Your Test

Short answer: the NCT checks that your headlights work, are in good condition and are correctly aimed. Headlamp aim is one of the most common reasons for failure. According to the National Car Testing Service (NCTS), 140,602 vehicles, or 5.03% of those tested, failed for headlamp aim in 2024. A like-for-like used headlight is a normal repair, as long as it’s the right unit, in good condition and properly aimed.

This guide explains what the test looks at, what commonly goes wrong with used and upgraded headlights, and how to prepare. It’s general information, so always check the latest details with NCTS.ie.

What does the NCT check on your headlights?

The test covers more than whether the bulbs light up. In general, testers look at:

  • Function: dipped beam and main beam both working
  • Aim: whether the beam is level and pointing in the right direction
  • Condition: cracked or damaged lenses, moisture inside the unit, a poor reflector or a loose unit
  • Xenon systems: whether the levelling and headlamp cleaning systems work, on cars that have them

The RSA also reminds drivers that the roadworthiness tests check the alignment of a vehicle’s lights to make sure they are level, but it’s still the driver’s responsibility to keep the vehicle roadworthy.

Why headlamp aim fails so many cars

Aim matters because a headlight that points too high dazzles other drivers, and one that points too low doesn’t show you the road. It can go wrong for simple reasons: a recently changed bulb that isn’t seated properly, a knock to the unit, or a headlight fitted without the beam being checked afterwards.

The NCTS advises a few checks before the test:

  • Make sure the headlamp is free of condensation, the lens is clean and the reflector is in good condition
  • Make sure the headlamp is secure in the unit and dips correctly
  • If a bulb was recently changed, make sure it’s correctly aligned and secured
  • If you’re unsure, ask a trusted mechanic or dealer to check the aim

Some Irish car guides put a basic headlamp aim adjustment at around €20 to €30 at a garage. Prices vary, so ask for a quote.

Will a used headlight pass the NCT?

Yes, if it’s the right one for your car and it’s in good order. Replacing a damaged headlight with a matching second-hand unit is a normal repair. To avoid problems:

  • Buy a like-for-like unit. Same model, side and lighting technology. Our guide to checking headlight compatibility shows how.
  • Check the condition. Look for cracks, moisture and broken mounting tabs before you buy.
  • Check the beam pattern. The RSA says headlamps on left-hand drive vehicles dip to the right and may dazzle oncoming drivers here. A unit from a left-hand-drive car may need adjustment or replacing to pass the aim check.
  • Get the aim set after fitting. Even a perfect match can sit a little differently once it’s fitted.

LED and HID upgrades: where people get caught out

Upgrades are where most headlight-related problems start. The RSA explains that to pass the NCT, a retrofitted HID kit must be type-approved, and the vehicle it’s fitted to must be approved for HID use. An approved kit fitted to an incompatible vehicle will result in a failure, and so will an unapproved kit on a compatible vehicle. HID bulbs put into regular halogen headlamps are also classed as a reason for failure.

The RSA says LED lighting is legal once it’s type-approved, fitted to a compatible vehicle and doesn’t dazzle other road users. For the details, see the RSA’s page on HID and LED headlights, and read more about the differences in our guide to halogen vs LED vs xenon headlights.

Pre-NCT headlight checklist

  • Dipped beam and main beam both work on both sides
  • Lenses are clear, with no cracks, and no moisture or condensation inside
  • Both units are firmly mounted, with no loose or broken tabs
  • Bulbs are seated correctly, especially if you changed one recently
  • Both beams sit at a similar height when you shine them on a wall
  • Xenon cars: levelling and headlamp washers work
  • Any retrofitted lighting is type-approved and suits your vehicle

Park facing a wall at night and compare the beams on both sides. If one is clearly higher, lower or pointing off to one side, have it checked before your test. The wall check is only a rough guide, since the test centre uses calibrated equipment.

Cloudy or damaged headlights

A hazy, yellowed lens reduces how much light reaches the road, and the NCTS specifically advises keeping the lens clean and the reflector in good condition. If your lens is only cloudy, a repair may be all you need. See our guide on headlight restoration cost in Ireland. If it’s cracked or the housing is damaged, a matching used unit is often the more sensible fix.

NCT headlight FAQs

Is headlamp aim a common NCT failure?

Yes. The NCTS says it’s one of the most common reasons for failure, with 140,602 vehicles (5.03%) failing for headlamp aim in 2024.

Do I need to adjust my headlights after fitting a used one?

It’s a good idea. The NCT checks alignment, and a newly fitted unit may need its aim set.

Can I fit LED or HID bulbs in my halogen headlights and pass the NCT?

Not always. The RSA says HID bulbs put into regular halogen headlamps are a reason for failure, and that retrofitted lighting must be type-approved and suitable for your vehicle.

Will condensation inside a headlight fail the NCT?

The NCTS advises making sure headlamps are free of condensation before the test, so it’s best to fix it first. In many cases a leaking unit can be resealed, or you can swap in a good used one.

Where can I get a headlight repaired or replaced?

You can find a repair shop on Autolight or browse used car headlights for a replacement.
